Drawing Near to God

  Call to Worship (Responsive)

Loving God, we come to worship today

because we love you and we want to love you more.

We come to worship needing love in our lives –

love for family, friends, strangers, and enemies.

In this hour of worship, touch our hearts, fill our hearts,

open our hearts to your love which passes all understanding.  Amen.

*Hymn of Praise #9                                                                            Sing Praise to the Father

Allowing God to Shape Us

Call to confession (Responsive)  Based on Daniel 9:4, 5

In the words of Daniel the prophet, let us pray to the Lord our God and confess: “Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments, we have sinned and done wrong.

Prayer of Confession  (Responsive)  Inspired by 1 Corinthians 13: 1-13

Merciful Father, we confess that we have failed you in many ways, but especially in following the example of true love shown to us through your Son, Jesus.

Because love is patient,

help us to be slow to judge, but quick to listen, hesitant to criticize, but eager to encourage, remembering your endless patience with us.

Because love is kind,

help our words to be gentle and thoughtful, and remind us that even small acts of kindness have great potential for good.

Because love does not envy or boast, and is not proud,

help us have hearts that are humble, ready to appreciate the good in others, and eager to celebrate their accomplishments and successes.

Because love is not rude or self-seeking,

help us to speak words that are easy on the ear and on the heart. When we’re tempted to get wrapped up in our own personal ambitions, desires, and disappointments, remind us that the bigger world beyond ourselves is full of people with aspirations, needs, and hurts.

Because love is not easily angered and keeps no record of wrongs,

help us to forgive others as you have forgiven us. When we want to hold onto grudges, teach us to release them, and to reach out instead with hands of love.

Because love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth,

help us to stand up for what is right and good, to defend the defenseless, and to help the helpless. Give us opportunities and courage to make a difference.

Because love always protects and always trusts,

help us to be a refuge for those around us.  When the world outside is cold, harsh, and threatening, may our hearts be places of acceptance, warmth, and comfort.

Finally, because love always perseveres,

help us to live faithfully according to the true meaning of love revealed in your Word. May our hearts continually beat with love for you and for others. Amen.                                                Based on a prayer of commitment written by Holley Gerth

Assurance of Pardon (Responsive) Psalm 103:8-12

The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

               Thanks be to God!

Coming before God’s Open Word

Children’s Message and Prayer of Blessing  (Unison)

Father, bless these children with the knowledge that you have adopted them into the family of Christ with unconditional, measureless love, and in return, may they love you and one another wholeheartedly with the same love. Amen.

  Prayer for Illumination

  Scripture Reading                            1 John 2:1-17, and Matthew 5:13-20 (pp. 862, 683)

  Message                                                                                              "Love Made Complete"

We would like to share some good news, which will need to be confirmed @ Dana Farber in Boston. Our daughter's (Kara's) Albany oncologist has reviewed her surgical pathology report and told us that results showed an atypical benign tumor. We feel greatly relieved!  The power of prayer is real!  Thank you everyone for your prayers, cards, and words of encouragement during this difficult time.

~PROPERTY MINISTRY WINDOW PROJECT COMPLETED~

The Property Ministry reports that the windows and screens to enclose the porch at the parsonage have now been installed and have made a really noticeable difference in the temperature and comfort level not only in the kitchen but also in the additional room at the back of the house that abuts the porch. The cost came in at just under $3000.00.  Donations toward this project will be most gratefully accepted as we give thanks for another needed improvement that has been completed.
