Drawing Near To God

Call to Worship  Based on Revelation 4 and  5

Come and worship the One

who sits on the throne of heaven, a throne encircled with a rainbow resembling an emerald, and from which come flashes of lightning and peals of thunder.

Come and worship the One

before whose throne it is like a crystal-clear sea of glass, and the seven spirits of God are blazing lamps.

Come and worship the One

around whose throne are living winged creatures, covered with eyes all around, who day and night never stop saying, "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come."

Come and worship the One

who lives for ever and ever, whose throne is surrounded by twenty-four elders who fall down before Him and worship Him. They lay their golden crowns before Him saying: "You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.”

Come and worship the One

whose throne is encircled by angels numbering ten thousand times ten thousand, all singing in a loud voice: "Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!"

Come and worship the One

who, with his blood, purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.

Come and worship the One

who has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and to one day reign on the earth.

*Hymn of Praise #98                                                         Majesty, Worship His Majesty

Allowing God to Shape Us

Call to Confession  Based on Hebrews 4:14, 16

Seeing that we have a great High Priest Jesus Christ, who has entered the inmost heaven, let us therefore approach his throne of grace with fullest confidence, that we may receive mercy for our failures and grace in our hour of need.  In the strength of this assurance, let us confess our sins to God.

  Prayer of Confession

Almighty God, we confess how hard it is to be your people. You have called us to be the church, to continue the mission of Jesus Christ to our lonely and confused world. Yet we acknowledge we are more indifferent than energetic in fulfilling our mission; more stingy than sharing with your gift of spiritual light; more self-centered than other-centered; more callous than compassionate; more obstinate than obedient; more legalistic than loving; Gracious Lord, have mercy upon us and forgive our sins.

[Moment of Silent Confession]

Merciful God, remove the obstacles preventing us from being

your representatives to a broken world.

Awaken our hearts to the purposes and power of your indwelling Spirit.

This we pray in Jesus’ holy name. Amen.

  Assurance of Pardon

For this is what the high and lofty One says - he who lives forever, whose name is holy: "I live in a high and holy place, but also with him who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite.”

Children’s Message and Prayer of Blessing  (Unison)

Lord Jesus, draw each of these children face-to-face with you.  May they know your goodness, your love, and the glory of your divine presence in their lives; may they experience your power to renew and strengthen them; and may they be eager to share their knowledge of you with others.  Amen.

  Prayer for Illumination

  Scripture Lesson                                                                                 Mark 9:2-9 (p. 714)

Message “Our Desire to Experience God only in the Mountaintop Moments of Life”

  Prayer of Blessing

*Doxology and Offertory Prayer (Unison)

Gracious God, you have given us your only Son, shown us the brilliance of his glory, and clothed us in his garments of holiness and everlasting life. Inspired by your generosity, we give these gifts freely in return so that others may know your love, salvation, and life eternal through Jesus Christ.  Amen.

Pastoral Prayer and The Lord’s Prayer

*Hymn #721                                                                                            Shine, Jesus, Shine

*Benediction, Blessing, and Response Hymn    My Friends May You Grow in Grace

My friends, may you grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior.

My friends, may you grow in grace, and in the knowledge of Jesus Christ.

To God be the glory, now and forever, now and forever, amen. (2x)
