God’s Greeting
Drawing Near to God
Call to Worship (Responsive)—Adapted from Psalm 91
We live in the shelter of the Most High, in the shadow of God Almighty.
Our refuge and our fortress is God in whom we trust.
The Lord will deliver us and protect us from our enemies.
God will shelter us under his wings.
God's faithfulness forms a shield around us.
Because God watches over us, we have no reason to fear.
We trust in God's care and presence.
God's angels stand guard around us,
and God is always ready to help in times of trouble.
God's loving presence is our sure defense. God's salvation is our joy!
*Hymn #78 O God Our Help in Ages Past
Allowing God to Shape Us
Call to Confession
Lent is a time of reflection, preparation, and repentance. As we fix our gaze upon Christ's great sacrifice, let us examine ourselves and confess our sin before God and one another. Let us pray.
Prayer of Confession (Unison)
Merciful Savior, we have been a wayward people. We were dead in our sin, and you gave us life. We wandered away from you, becoming exiles, and you rescued us and carried us home. We have been sick, broken, and needy, and you healed and restored us.
[Moment of Prayerful Silence]
We deserve none of this. We deserve the penalty you bore on our behalf. Yet, your love is so deep, your mercy so wide, your embrace so all-enfolding that you have done for us what we could never do for ourselves. You have made us your own. You have forgiven us and loved us. We receive this gift with gratitude, joy, and awe. For the sake of Christ we pray. Amen.
Assurance of Pardon
You have been forgiven by the unfailing mercy of Christ Jesus your Savior. Go, as beloved children of God, to love and serve the Lord. Thanks be to God. Amen.
Coming before God’s Open Word
Children’s Message and Prayer of Blessing (Unison)
All-powerful and merciful God, preserve these children from falling into sin and its spiritually and physically destructive evils. Empower us, through your Holy Spirit, to raise them up to lead holy and virtuous lives of faithfulness, love, and humble service to you and to others. Amen.
Blessing on the Word Proclaimed
Scripture Luke 4:1-13 (p. 727)
Message “Temptations of Bread, Power, and Safety”

*Doxology and Offertory Prayer (Unison)
Holy Father, sustainer and supplier of all our needs, our hearts overflow with joy and love for the privilege of walking in close relationship with you and for the blessing of being called your own. Receive these gifts, we pray, as our faithful and grateful response to your gifts of grace and mercy in our lives. Amen.
Prayer Requests, Pastoral Prayer, and The Lord’s Prayer
*Hymn of Exhortation #540 Take Time to Be Holy
*Benediction, Blessing, and Response Hymn My Friends May You Grow in Grace
My friends, may you grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior.
