DRAWING NEARER TO GOD

Call to Worship (Responsive)  Isaiah 41:9-10

You whom I took from the ends of the earth,

and called from its farthest corners,

saying to you, “You are my servant,

     I have chosen you and not cast you off”;

do not fear, for I am with you,

     do not be afraid, for I am your God;

I will strengthen you, I will help you,

I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.

*Hymn of Praise #50                                           Sing Praise to God Who Reigns Above

TURNING OUR HEARTS TO GOD

  Call to Confession

When we gather to praise God, we remember that we are people who have preferred our wills to his.  Accepting his power to become new persons in Christ, and servants of his Gospel, let us confess our sin before God and one another.

  Prayer of Confession (Unison)

Almighty God, we acknowledge how hard it is to be your people.  You have called us to be the church, to continue the mission of Jesus Christ to our lonely and confused world.  Yet we confess we are more apathetic than active, isolated than involved, callous than compassionate, obstinate than obedient, legalistic than loving.  Gracious Lord, have mercy upon us and forgive our sins.

 [Silent Prayer of Confession]

Renew us, O God, for the work of your kingdom.

Remove the obstacles preventing us from being your representatives to a broken world.  Awaken our hearts to the promised gift of your indwelling Spirit.  This we pray in Jesus’ powerful name. Amen.

  Assurance of Pardon (Responsive)

Almighty God hears your prayers of repentance, brings you new life, forgives you, redeems you, and gives you a new eagerness to promote his Gospel.  Take hold of this forgiveness, and serve him in the Spirit of Jesus.

       Praise be to God! Amen.

Children’s Sermon  (Please Note:  Children’s Sunday School is in recess today.)

Prayer of Blessing upon Our Children (Unison)

Lord Jesus, may our children always acknowledge you as the Son of the Most High God, and may they experience the power and direction of your Spirit within them.  May they be your light in this world, testifying without shame to your truth, and attracting many to the good news of your gifts of salvation and eternal life.  Amen.

ALLOWING GOD TO SHAPE US

Prayer for Illumination and Scripture Lesson                   2 Timothy 2:8-15 (p. 842)

  Message                                                                                       “Licensed to Proclaim”

  Prayer of Blessing

GIVING OUR GIFTS AND OURSELVES FOR GOD’S GLORY

  Offering/Offertory

*Doxology (#809) and Offertory Prayer (Unison)

Blessed are you, O Lord our God, maker of all things.  Through your goodness you have blessed us with these gifts. With them we offer ourselves to your service and dedicate our lives to the care and redemption of all that you have made, for the sake of him who gave himself for us - Jesus Christ, our Lord.  Amen.

Pastoral Prayer and The Lord’s Prayer

*Hymn #574                                                             Lord, Speak to Me, That I May Speak

*Benediction, Blessing, and Response Hymn    My Friends May You Grow in Grace

My friends, may you grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior.

My friends, may you grow in grace, and in the knowledge of Jesus Christ.

To God be the glory, now and forever, now and forever, amen. (2x)

RESERVATIONS SHOULD BE MADE NO LATER THAN TODAY, OCTOBER 13, and TICKETS WILL BE DELIVERED TO YOU BY NEXT SUNDAY, OCTOBER 20.  CCRM banquet organizers will arrange for those attending from KRC to be seated together at 1 or 2 tables, depending on the number of reservations we make.  Reservations may also be made by calling the Mission directly at 462-0421 BEFORE October 13.  Let the representative know if you wish to sit with the KRC group.

~CITV CONCERT SERIES PLANNED FOR 2013 – 2014~

Kinderhook Reformed Church is pleased to present the 2013 – 2014 season of Concerts in the Village (CITV), a concert series begun 4 years ago under the sponsorship of KRC’s Stewardship Ministry as a music outreach to the church’s surrounding communities featuring our refurbished pipe organ.  Continuing under the dedicated administration of KRC’s CITV committee and the capable and talented leadership of music director and organist, David Smith, the series has evolved to include a variety of orchestral instrumentalists, vocal soloists, a chorus of over 70 voices (now known as the Broad Street Chorale), and a wide selection of sacred and secular pieces from diverse musical periods and cultures.

All of the following concerts will be performed in KRC’s sanctuary.  A suggested donation of $15 will be gratefully accepted to assist in the ongoing funding of this exceptional series.

NOVEMBER 10, 2013 3:00 PM  “Handel Sacred and Secular:  Royal, Church and Theater Music of the Baroque in England” with the Broad Street Chorale, soloists Amanda Boyd, Jon Morrell and others, and orchestra. The program will include the third suite of The Water Music, the monumental anthem “The Ways of Zion do Mourn,” and opera arias, duets and choruses.

FEBRUARY, 2014  Chamber Concert:  English Music of the Renaissance and Romantic Periods:  Madrigals to Part Songs, Motets to Anthems. (Alternatively a concert devoted to the role of pastoral and folk music in England.)

MARCH, 2014  Organ Recital by David Smith:  English Organ Music from the 17th through 20th centuries.

MAY, 2014  “Purcell Sacred and Secular: Home, Church and Theater Music of the Early Baroque in England” with the Broad Street Chorale, soloists Amanda Boyd, Jon Morrell and others, and orchestra.  This program will include the famously dramatic opera Dido and Aeneas, as well as the Te Deum and Jubilate of 1694 and a selection of consort and solo vocal music.

Also directed by David Smith, KRC’s Fourth Annual Lessons and Carols Christmas Worship Service will be presented on December 22. Lessons and Carols is a worship service celebrating the birth of Jesus. The story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus is told in nine short Bible readings from Genesis, the prophetic books, and the Gospels, along with the singing of Christmas carols, hymns, and choir music. The first Lessons and Carols was held on Christmas Eve, 1918, at King's College, Cambridge, England, and has been broadcast from there by the BBC to millions of listeners around the world each Christmas Eve since 1931. The order of worship was adapted from an order prepared 38 years earlier by Edward White Benson, Bishop of Truro. Tradition says that the bishop organized a 10 pm service in Cornwall on Christmas Eve, 1880, in a temporary wooden shed serving as his cathedral.

A Christmas gift to our community from the KRC family, Lessons and Carols is open to all.

Praises and thanks to our Lord that the BROOKS BAR-B-CUE/dessert sale/community outreach, sponsored by Kinderhook Reformed Church Cemetery recently, more than met expectations.  $2400 was raised, all of which will go toward operation and maintenance of the cemetery grounds, an increasingly costly ministry to our community. The Cemetery Committee wishes to thank all those who helped in making this important event a great success again this year.

KRC’s recent Concert in the Village, “The Art of Song in England,”  featuring  performances by soprano Amanda Boyd, tenor Jon Morrell and pianist David Smith, was very well-received by the 100-plus people who attended.  Praise God for the talents and dedication of all who worked so diligently to make this event a successful ministry of music to our surrounding communities.
