DRAWING NEARER TO GOD

Call to Worship (Responsive)  (Based on Psalm 27)

The Lord is my light and my salvation;
I have no reason to fear.
The Lord is the stronghold of my life;
God hides me in the shelter of his hand in time of trouble,
And lifts me up and sets me high on a rock.
One thing I ask of you, O Lord, is that I may dwell in your house

all the days of my life.
Show me your ways. Teach me the paths you would have me follow.
I know I can wait for you, Lord, for my courage comes from you.

*Hymn of Praise #26   (All verses)                        Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven

TURNING OUR HEARTS TO GOD

  Call to Confession

God is merciful and gracious, with a steadfast love toward us that reaches as high as the heavens. Because of that love, God is slow to anger and always ready to forgive us. Let us confess our sins, knowing that God is eager to hear our heartfelt prayer of repentance.

 Prayer of Confession (Unison)

Turning to you, O God, we confess that accounts of Jesus’ suffering and crucifixion are all too familiar. We so easily lose touch with what your Son really did for us and take His sacrifice too lightly. We confess that we do not succeed in sharing Jesus' sorrow for our sin.

 [Moment of Silence]

We also confess, O Lord,

that we so easily hang onto bitterness, hurt, anger and disappointment, rather than letting go in faith and trust, releasing ourselves to the healing and cleansing power of your Spirit. Forgive us for our willingness to settle for so much less than you desire to give us and to do in us.  Restore us to right relationship with you and with one another, for the sake of your Son, our Savior and Friend, Jesus Christ.  Amen.

Assurance of Pardon (Responsive)

“As far as the east is from the west, so far God removes our transgressions from us.” Friends, this is the message of the gospel. This is the Good News which we believe and proclaim: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

        Alleluia! Amen.

  Children’s Message and Blessing (Unison)

All-knowing God, preserve these children from the sins of selfishness and greed.  Lead them into holy and virtuous lives of love, humble service, and generosity to you, to the work of your Kingdom, and to others. Amen.

ALLOWING GOD TO SHAPE US

Prayer for Illumination

Scripture Lesson                                                                                     Luke 17:5-10 (p. 741)

  Message                                                                                                       “Dutiful Faith”

  Prayer of Blessing

GIVING OUR GIFTS AND OURSELVES FOR GOD’S GLORY

  Offering/Offertory                 Invention No. 20 (Mesto)                           H. Strategier

*Doxology (#809) and Offertory Prayer (Unison)

Blessed are you, O Lord our God, maker of all things.  Through your goodness you have blessed us with these gifts. With them we offer ourselves to your service and dedicate our lives to the care and redemption of all that you have made, for the sake of him who gave himself for us - Jesus Christ, our Lord.  Amen.

Offertory Prayer —  Ignatius of Loyola.  (Unison)

Gracious God, the generosity of your Spirit is evident all around us in the diversity and pageantry of your creation. May our giving to your mission and ministry be cheerful, open-handed, and gracious as we give thanks for our blessings and recognize the needs of our neighbors, both near and around the world.

Pastoral Prayer and the Lord's Prayer

*Hymn #60  (All verses)                                                              Great Is Thy Faithfulness

*Benediction, Blessing, and Response Hymn    My Friends May You Grow in Grace

My friends, may you grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior.

My friends, may you grow in grace, and in the knowledge of Jesus Christ.

To God be the glory, now and forever, now and forever, amen. (2x)

~CITV CONCERT SERIES PLANNED FOR 2013 – 2014~

Kinderhook Reformed Church is pleased to present the 2013 – 2014 season of Concerts in the Village (CITV), a concert series begun 4 years ago under the sponsorship of KRC’s Stewardship Ministry as a music outreach to the church’s surrounding communities featuring our refurbished pipe organ.  Continuing under the dedicated administration of KRC’s CITV committee and the capable and talented leadership of music director and organist, David Smith, the series has evolved to include a variety of orchestral instrumentalists, vocal soloists, a chorus of over 70 voices (now known as the Broad Street Chorale), and a wide selection of sacred and secular pieces from diverse musical periods and cultures.

All of the following concerts will be performed in KRC’s sanctuary.  A suggested donation of $15 will be gratefully accepted to assist in the ongoing funding of this exceptional series.

NOVEMBER 10, 2013 3:00 PM  “Handel Sacred and Secular:  Royal, Church and Theater Music of the Baroque in England” with the Broad Street Chorale, soloists Amanda Boyd, Jon Morrell and others, and orchestra. The program will include the third suite of The Water Music, the monumental anthem “The Ways of Zion do Mourn,” and opera arias, duets and choruses.

FEBRUARY, 2014  Chamber Concert:  English Music of the Renaissance and Romantic Periods:  Madrigals to Part Songs, Motets to Anthems. (Alternatively a concert devoted to the role of pastoral and folk music in England.)x

MARCH, 2014  Organ Recital by David Smith:  English Organ Music from the 17th through 20th centuries.

MAY, 2014  “Purcell Sacred and Secular: Home, Church and Theater Music of the Early Baroque in England” with the Broad Street Chorale, soloists Amanda Boyd, Jon Morrell and others, and orchestra.  This program will include the famously dramatic opera Dido and Aeneas, as well as the Te Deum and Jubilate of 1694 and a selection of consort and solo vocal music.

Also directed by David Smith, KRC’s Fourth Annual Lessons and Carols Christmas Worship Service will be presented on December 22. Lessons and Carols is a worship service celebrating the birth of Jesus. The story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus is told in nine short Bible readings from Genesis, the prophetic books, and the Gospels, along with the singing of Christmas carols, hymns, and choir music. The first Lessons and Carols was held on Christmas Eve, 1918, at King's College, Cambridge, England, and has been broadcast from there by the BBC to millions of listeners around the world each Christmas Eve since 1931. The order of worship was adapted from an order prepared 38 years earlier by Edward White Benson, Bishop of Truro. Tradition says that the bishop organized a 10 pm service in Cornwall on Christmas Eve, 1880, in a temporary wooden shed serving as his cathedral.

A Christmas gift to our community from the KRC family, Lessons and Carols is open to all.

~LOOKING AHEAD ~
A NOTE ON NEXT YEAR’S CLASSIS ASSESSMENT~

In response to some who have had questions regarding the distribution of our Classis Assessment contributions, they are divided three ways among the General Synod (national), Albany Synod (regional), and Columbia-Greene Classis (local).  Next year, 2014, the assessment will be $86.79, and will be distributed as follows:

General Synod:  $49.29   (up $1.67 from 2013)

Albany  Synod:           $29.00   (unchanged from 2013)

C.  G.   Classis:   $  8.50   (unchanged from 2013)

2014 TOTAL      $86.79

Please see RCA’s  Stewardship Report (when it becomes available) for information on  General Synod’s use of  its share of  assessed funds. Albany Synod’s portion is used to cover administrative and Camp Fowler expenses, as well as services to our congregation, including leadership development, library/video resources, and crisis management.  Classis’s share is used to cover administrative costs and retreats.

~A FRIENDLY REMINDER~

Just a note to remind those who use the Fellowship Room and kitchen to take a few minutes to be sure that these rooms are left in good condition – refuse picked up from the floor, tables and serving counter cleared and wiped down if needed, coffee pots emptied and washed, dirty dishes placed in the dishwasher, sink rinsed down, etc.  Your attention to these things will be greatly appreciated.
