  Welcome, Announcements, and God’s Greeting

DRAWING NEARER TO GOD

  Call to Worship  (Responsive)

In Christ, the God of heaven has made his home on earth.

Christ dwells among us and is one with us.

Highest above all creation, he lives among the least.

He journeys with the rejected, welcomes the weary,

     and pardons the worst offenders.

Come now, all who thirst,

and drink from his fountain of life.

Come now, all who hunger,

and be filled with his goodness.

Come now, all who seek,

     and find his infinite love.

*Hymn of Praise #497                                                               Wonderful Grace of Jesus

TURNING OUR HEARTS TO GOD

Call to Confession - Based on Hebrews 4:14, 16

Seeing that we have a great High Priest in the inmost heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us confess even our greatest failures to God with confidence that we will receive his forgiveness.

  Prayer of Confession (Unison)

Gracious God, our sins are too heavy to carry and too deep to undo.  Forgive what our lips tremble to name and what our hearts can no longer bear.  Through Jesus Christ, the light of the world, set us free from a past that we cannot change; open to us a future in which we can be changed; and grant us grace to grow more and more in your image.  Set us free to serve you in the world as agents of your reconciling love in Jesus Christ.  Amen.

 [Silent Prayer of Confession]

  Assurance of Pardon (Responsive)

In the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, we are assured that there is no sin so terrible that God cannot forgive, no hurt so terrible that God cannot heal.  God accepts, God forgives, and God sets free.  Receive his forgiving love.

              Hallelujah!  We are set free.

  Children’s Sermon

Prayer of Blessing upon Our Children  (Unison)

Lord Jesus, may our children always acknowledge you as the Son of the Most High God and experience the power and direction of your Spirit within them.  May they be your light in this world, testifying without shame to your truth, and attracting many to the good news of salvation and eternal life.  Amen.

~CITV CONCERT SERIES PLANNED FOR 2013 – 2014~

Kinderhook Reformed Church is pleased to present the 2013 – 2014 season of Concerts in the Village (CITV), a concert series begun 4 years ago under the sponsorship of KRC’s Stewardship Ministry as a music outreach to the church’s surrounding communities featuring our refurbished pipe organ.  Continuing under the dedicated administration of KRC’s CITV committee and the capable and talented leadership of music director and organist, David Smith, the series has evolved to include a variety of orchestral instrumentalists, vocal soloists, a chorus of over 70 voices (now known as the Broad Street Chorale), and a wide selection of sacred and secular pieces from diverse musical periods and cultures.

All of the following concerts will be performed in KRC’s sanctuary.  A suggested donation of $15 will be gratefully accepted to assist in the ongoing funding of this exceptional series.

SEPTEMBER 29, 2013, 3:00 PM.  “The Art of Song in England”  Vocal solo and piano music 1900-1950, featuring works of Benjamin Britten, Frank Bridge, Roger Quilter, Gerald Finzi, and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Performing will be soprano Amanda Boyd, tenor Jon Morrell and pianist David Smith.

NOVEMBER 10, 2013 3:00 PM.  “Handel Sacred and Secular:  Royal, Church and Theater Music of the Baroque in England” with the Broad Street Chorale, soloists Amanda Boyd, Jon Morrell and others, and orchestra. The program will include the third suite of The Water Music, the monumental anthem “The Ways of Zion do Mourn,” and opera arias, duets and choruses.

FEBRUARY, 2014.  Chamber Concert:  English Music of the Renaissance and Romantic Periods:  Madrigals to Part Songs, Motets to Anthems. (Alternatively a concert devoted to the role of pastoral and folk music in England.)

MARCH, 2014.  Organ Recital by David Smith:  English Organ Music from the 17th through 20th centuries.

MAY, 2014.  “Purcell Sacred and Secular: Home, Church and Theater Music of the Early Baroque in England” with the Broad Street Chorale, soloists Amanda Boyd, Jon Morrell and others, and orchestra.  This program will include the famously dramatic opera Dido and Aeneas, as well as the Te Deum and Jubilate of 1694 and a selection of consort and solo vocal music.

                                                                                       ~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Also directed by David Smith, KRC’s Fourth Annual Lessons and Carols Christmas Worship Service will be presented on December 22. Lessons and Carols is a worship service celebrating the birth of Jesus. The story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus is told in nine short Bible readings from Genesis, the prophetic books, and the Gospels, along with the singing of Christmas carols, hymns, and choir music. The first Lessons and Carols was held on Christmas Eve, 1918, at King's College, Cambridge, England, and has been broadcast from there by the BBC to millions of listeners around the world each Christmas Eve since 1931. The order of worship was adapted from an order prepared 38 years earlier by Edward White Benson, Bishop of Truro. Tradition says that the bishop organized a 10 pm service in Cornwall on Christmas Eve, 1880, in a temporary wooden shed serving as his cathedral.      A Christmas gift to our community from the KRC family, Lessons and Carols is open to all.

~THANK YOU FROM CAPITAL CITY RESCUE MISSION~

Dear KRC Friends – Thank you so much for your donation of school supplies! Your gift is a crucial part of helping the Mission offer the basic necessities of life.  And even beyond this, you are sending a message to someone in need that you care.                                                                   With a grateful heart, Perry Jones

Please pick up your copy of

The Kinderhook Reformed Church Cemetery is sponsoring a BROOKS BAR-B-CUE again this year from 3:30 – 6:30 p.m. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 2, on the front and side lawns of the church. Full dinners are $10, and chicken-only dinners, $6.  All proceeds will go toward operation and maintenance of the cemetery grounds, an increasingly costly ministry to our community, and the Cemetery Committee is counting on your help in making this important fundraising event a success again this year.  As part of the fundraiser, desserts will be sold at a very reasonable price to enhance the meal.  If you are able to donate baked goods to help supply the dessert menu, please indicate your contribution on the sign-up sheet at the back table.

The Consistory would like to thank all who have contributed to the more than $3,500 received to date toward the cost of replacing the parsonage windows.  The total expenditure for this capital improvement is upward of $7,000, and additional donations will be greatly appreciated.    Gifts clearly designated "Parsonage Windows" may be placed in the weekly offering plate.

"THE OLDE DUTCH AND SUCH" CRAFTS GROUP meets on Fridays at 9:30 a.m. in the main floor classroom opposite the church office, and we warmly invite you to join us in creating new plans and new items for the 2013 KRC Bazaar.  IF YOU ENJOY CRAFT ACTIVITIES, BUT ARE UNABLE TO MEET WITH US ON FRIDAY MORNINGS, PLEASE CONSULT WITH DAWN TUTTLE ABOUT HOW YOU MAY BE ABLE TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE BAZAAR BY WORKING FROM HOME ON YOUR OWN TIME SCHEDULE.

If you are willing to reserve Saturday, October 5, 2013, on your calendar for participating in the ministry of packaging 10,000 meals for the Stop Hunger Now Meal Packaging Program at Ghent Reformed Church, please sign on the sheet provided on the back table. The event will begin at 10:00 a.m. with a short time of devotions, followed by a brief gathering to learn about world hunger and the true blessings we have in our small community. Lunch is at noon, and the meal packaging process, which should take only about an hour and a half, will begin at 1:00 pm.
